An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Oppose Anti-Wilderness Riders SA 6039 and SA 5890 on the NDAA

828 so far! Help us get to 1,000 signers!

Strip SA 6039 and SA 5890 from S. 4784. Attaching the so-called "Save Our Sequoias Act" and the "Fix Our Forests Act" to the National Defense Authorization Act is a backdoor maneuver to pass legislation that couldn't survive a standalone Senate vote — and you know it. SA 6039 would allow logging inside giant sequoia groves, including in designated Wilderness areas, while categorically excluding those actions from NEPA review. That's not saving sequoias — it's a logging authorization dressed up in conservation language. SA 5890 would expand livestock grazing and manager-ignited fire in Wilderness areas, overriding the bedrock protections of the Wilderness Act. Neither bill belongs anywhere near a defense authorization bill. The Wilderness Act exists to protect lands from exactly this kind of manipulation. These riders didn't earn a floor vote on their own merits. Don't reward that failure by hiding them in must-pass legislation. Vote to remove both amendments from the NDAA.
