Transgenic mice NOT transgender mice. Last night, the President said that tax payer money is going to making transgender mice…. I don’t know if this was intentional misinformation or if the President and Musk just don’t understand what they are reading. Regardless, transgender mice are not being made! TRANSGENIC mice are being made and have been the gold standard in biomedical research for more than 40 years. Transgenic mice, including humanized mouse models, are essential to understanding the role of genes and their proteins in diseases and the development of new therapies. We can’t do these studies in humans!
Transgenic mice are intentionally developed to express or not express certain genes. An example would be inserting a version of a gene thought to be involved in cancer into a mouse and determining if they develop cancer and then testing different therapies as potential cancer treatment.
My editorial comment: This is one example of why firing career federal employees with subject area expertise, and then letting 20-yr old tech bros decided what federal spending will be allowed to continue, is a really bad idea. Unless you don't want scientists to continue trying to find cures for cancer.
