I am reaching out to urge your support and cosponsorship of HB1/SB3695, the Compassionate Use and Research of Entheogens (CURE) Act. In the face of Illinois' escalating mental health crisis, the CURE Act represents a beacon of hope, offering relief where traditional pharmaceuticals and treatments have fallen short. This groundbreaking bill has the potential to impact millions, establishing a safe, legal framework for science-driven, regulated access to innovative entheogenic therapies.
The CURE Act allows adults to legally engage in supervised psychedelic-assisted therapy administered by trained facilitators. This therapy utilizes natural medicines produced and tested by licensed entities and available through regulated service centers. This progressive approach aligns with initiatives already underway in states like Oregon and Colorado and countries including Australia, demonstrating a global shift towards these accessible therapeutic options.
Compelling scientific research underscores the safety and efficacy of psychedelic-assisted therapy, especially for those who have found little relief in conventional treatments. Prestigious institutions such as Johns Hopkins, UCLA, and the University of Alabama have published studies indicating the effectiveness of entheogenic therapies in treating conditions like PTSD, depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders. Notably, the FDA has recognized psilocybin, a key component in certain therapeutic mushrooms, as a “breakthrough treatment.”
The CURE Act also prioritizes patient safety by decriminalizing the personal use of psilocybin, ensuring individuals seeking healing are not penalized. It is crucial to note that the Act does not promote recreational drug use. Under this legislation, psilocybin would only be dispensed at licensed centers and used under the supervision of licensed facilitators.
