The SAVE Act's requirement for in-person voter registration with strict proof of citizenship documentation would create significant barriers to voting for millions of eligible Americans. This includes married women whose names may not match their birth certificates, as well as many low-income, elderly, disabled, and rural citizens who may lack ready access to documents like passports. There are also concerns it could disproportionately disenfranchise communities of color. While ensuring election integrity is important, multiple studies have found no evidence of widespread non-citizen voting fraud that would justify such restrictive measures. The SAVE Act appears to address a non-existent problem at great cost to citizens' fundamental voting rights. I urge you to vigorously oppose this unnecessary legislation that threatens to suppress the vote of many lawful residents. Protecting equal access to the ballot box for all eligible voters should be the priority.
