Demand Congressional Authorization Before Military Action Against Iran

I am writing to demand that Congress fulfill its constitutional duty to authorize any military action against Iran before the current military buildup escalates into armed conflict. The scale of forces now positioned within striking distance of Iran represents a clear preparation for war, yet Congress has not debated or voted on any authorization for the use of military force.
According to recent reporting, two aircraft carrier strike groups are now deployed in the region. The USS Abraham Lincoln has been in the Arabian Sea since January 15, positioned approximately 240 kilometers off Oman's coast, while the USS Gerald Ford passed through the Gibraltar Strait on January 18. These Nimitz-class carriers bring 11 destroyers, three Littoral Combat Ships, support vessels, and likely nuclear attack submarines capable of launching Tomahawk missiles at land targets. Over 100 combat aircraft including F-15s, F-18s, F-22s, F-35s, and B-2 bombers have been deployed across bases in Cyprus, Italy, the Azores, Spain, Diego Garcia, and Jordan.
Most significantly, more than 15 KC-135 air-to-air refueling tankers have been repositioned since January 16. Military analysts note this suggests any potential air campaign could be prolonged rather than a one-off strike. Extensive C-5 Galaxy and C-17 Globemaster flights have transported air defense systems to protect against Iranian retaliation, and six E-3 Sentry command and control aircraft are now in position.
This deployment represents preparation for major military operations, not defensive posturing. Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution grants Congress alone the power to declare war. The 1973 War Powers Resolution requires congressional authorization for sustained military action. No such authorization exists for war with Iran.
I urge you to publicly demand that the administration seek congressional authorization before any military strikes against Iran and to oppose any unauthorized military action. The American people deserve a voice through their elected representatives before being committed to another Middle East war.
