I am writing to urge you to take immediate action to oppose the military operation in Venezuela that resulted in strikes on Caracas, Miranda, Aragua, and La Guaira at approximately 2am local time on the reported date, and the alleged capture of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores.
This military action represents a dangerous violation of international law and Venezuelan sovereignty. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed deep alarm about the escalation, noting potential breaches of international law and warning that the attacks constitute a dangerous precedent with worrying implications for the entire region. Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva stated that the bombings and capture cross an unacceptable line and recall the worst moments of interference in Latin American politics.
President Trump's own statements reveal the true motivation behind this operation. He declared the US will be very strongly involved in Venezuela's oil industry, saying we have the greatest oil companies in the world and we're going to be very much involved in it. This is not about democracy or human rights. This is about seizing control of another nation's natural resources through military force.
The operation resulted in US casualties, with Trump acknowledging that a couple of guys were hit during the raid on what he described as a highly guarded fortress. These service members were put at risk not to defend our nation, but to facilitate corporate access to Venezuelan oil.
I urge you to publicly condemn this military action, demand the immediate withdrawal of US forces from Venezuela, and support legislation that prevents the use of military force for resource extraction. The Venezuelan people, not US oil companies, should determine their country's future. Please respond with your position on this urgent matter and the specific steps you will take to oppose this illegal military intervention.
