Save Great Salt Lake from more extractive perils.

The Great Salt Lake is a precious natural resource that must be protected for future generations. While the demand for lithium is understandable given the growing need for rechargeable batteries, any extraction process must prioritize environmental stewardship and sustainability. It is concerning to learn that some companies may be considering methods that could further deplete or harm the lake's fragile ecosystem. As stewards of this unique inland sea, we have a responsibility to ensure that any lithium extraction occurs through environmentally responsible and water-neutral processes. The proposed rules from the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands are a step in the right direction, but we must remain vigilant and hold companies accountable for conducting thorough feasibility assessments and proving their methods will not impair the lake's health. The Great Salt Lake is a vital part of Utah's natural heritage, and its preservation should take precedence over short-term economic gains. Any lithium extraction must be done in a way that prioritizes the lake's long-term sustainability, without compromising its delicate balance or contributing to further water loss or waste. We owe it to future generations to protect this invaluable resource.
