I write to support the Stop AI Price Gouging and Wage Fixing Act of 2025 introduced by Rep. Greg Casar. This legislation would ban the exploitative practice of "surveillance pricing" where companies use our personal data to set individualized prices and wages, taking advantage of our circumstances. This disturbing tactic allows corporations to hike prices when we get paid or need to travel urgently, gouging us at our most vulnerable moments. It also enables reverse auctions to drive down wages for workers like rideshare drivers. Beyond being unethical, surveillance pricing undermines free market principles by allowing opaque price discrimination. The evidence shows surveillance pricing is rapidly proliferating, with airlines like Delta now using AI to determine 20% of airfares based on factors like passengers' "pain points." If left unchecked, this pernicious practice will spread like wildfire through the economy. We cannot allow companies to exploit the very data we unwittingly provide to nickel-and-dime us and underpay workers. Rejecting unfair surveillance capitalism must be a priority to protect consumers and labor. I urge you to cosponsor this vital legislation to prohibit corporations from abusing our personal information for blatant price gouging and wage suppression. Consumer privacy and fair competition in the marketplace are at stake.
