The "big beautiful bill" proposed by the Trump administration is a misguided and fiscally irresponsible piece of legislation that prioritizes tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations over the needs of ordinary Americans. Despite claims of boosting the economy, the reality is that it will add trillions to the deficit while gutting crucial social safety net programs like Medicaid, food stamps, and student loan assistance. The bill's centerpiece of extending the 2017 Trump tax cuts would cost $4 trillion over the next decade, exacerbating income inequality. Proposed tax breaks for tipped income, overtime pay, and Social Security benefits are little more than empty promises set to expire after a few years. In contrast, the draconian cuts to Medicaid threatening coverage for over 7 million people, slashing food assistance for struggling families, and making student loans more burdensome are permanent austerity measures that will harm the most vulnerable. Moreover, the timing could not be worse, with rising interest rates and inflation posing risks that big deficit spending did not carry in 2017. Plowing ahead with this fiscally reckless agenda gambles with economic stability. I urge you to reject this legislation that so blatantly favors the wealthy at the expense of American families and fiscal prudence. The nation deserves better than partisan giveaways masquerading as economic policy.
