*Strengthening Michigan's Housing Package: Addressing Systemic Issues of Homelessness*
The proposed Michigan housing package, including a "bill of rights for the homeless," is a commendable step towards addressing the systemic issues that contribute to homelessness. However, it is crucial to strengthen the language and implementation of this bill to ensure effective protection. The bill should explicitly address the discrimination faced by unhoused individuals, not only in terms of housing but also in employment and access to public spaces. It should also safeguard their right to vote and protect their personal records and property. Finally, it should discuss support systems and targeted assistance to aid unhoused individuals back into stable living situations long-term. This is not just about providing shelter, but about humanizing homelessness and acknowledging the systemic factors that lead to such circumstances. Therefore, it is requested that the bill be revised to reflect these considerations.
