An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Trump Says “I Don’t Know” If I’ll Uphold the Constitution: Stand Up Now!

36 so far! Help us get to 50 signers!

President Trump’s response—“I don’t know”—when asked if he’s obligated to uphold the Constitution is not just careless, it’s disqualifying (NPR, May 2025). That oath isn’t optional. It’s the foundation of our democracy. If a president can’t commit to defending the Constitution, they have no business leading this country. Since returning to office in 2025, Trump has repeatedly acted in ways that defy constitutional norms. He’s pushed illegal executive orders, attempted to dismantle birthright citizenship despite federal court rulings, and continues to politicize the DOJ for personal gain. This is authoritarianism dressed up as leadership. It’s past time for Republican lawmakers to speak out. Silence is complicity. If you’re unwilling to defend the Constitution now, historians will remember your failure. We need action—investigations, accountability, and a firm line in defense of democracy.
