Oppose & Vote NO on Revival of SAVE Act Next Session: Preserve Voting Rights

Today I take pen in hand to write again about threats to voting rights, and to urge you to oppose any revival of the SAVE Act in the next session of Congress.
They’re at it again: Extreme right Tea party ‘Patriots’ want to revive the SAVE Act in Congress again, by attaching it to ‘Must Pass’ legislation.
The bill would require documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote, poses a grave threat to our democracy and risks disenfranchising millions of eligible voters.
This legislation is rooted in the utterly false narrative of widespread voter fraud and would erect unnecessary barriers to the fundamental right to vote. States already have many safeguards in place. This would be overreach AGAIN by rabid extreme right activists.
Extensive research has shown that strict documentary proof of citizenship requirements disproportionately burden naturalized citizens, the elderly, racial minorities, and other vulnerable groups who face challenges obtaining the required documents.
This modern-day poll tax violates the spirit of the Voting Rights Act and the 14th Amendment's guarantee of equal protection under the law. We must reject any new attempts to attach the SAVE Act to must-pass legislation, a cynical tactic aimed at circumventing the deliberative process.
Our elected representatives have a solemn duty to uphold the sanctity of our elections by opposing measures that make it harder for eligible citizens to exercise their constitutional rights.
Voting is the bedrock of our democracy, and we cannot allow it to be undermined by discriminatory laws cloaked in the guise of election integrity.
I urge you to stand firm against the SAVE Act and any efforts to weaponize the legislative process to pass this bill.
