I write to you today as your constituent. As a person who cares about others. A person that wants all humans treated humanely. I am demanding an immediate, public investigation into the death of Nurul Amin Shah Alam after actions taken by federal immigration authorities. According to reports, Mr. Alam was a blind refugee who relied on a walking stick to navigate the world. He was taken into custody in Buffalo. When officials determined he could not be deported, they did not ensure his safe return home. Instead, he was reportedly left five miles from his residence in freezing temperatures. He died trying to make his way back. If these facts are accurate, this is not a bureaucratic mistake. It is a shocking failure of duty that cost a vulnerable man his life. Federal authorities have a legal and moral obligation to ensure the safety of anyone in their custody. Abandoning a blind man in winter conditions miles from home demonstrates either reckless negligence or outright cruelty. Either explanation demands accountability. Congress must answer the following questions: • Who authorized the release of a blind detainee without safe transportation home? • What protocols were followed—or ignored—in this case? • Were supervisors aware of his disability and the weather conditions? • What disciplinary or criminal investigations are underway? If agents violated policy, they must be held accountable. If policy allowed this to happen, that policy is indefensible and must be changed immediately. When the government detains a vulnerable person, it assumes responsibility for their safety. Leaving a blind man in lethal conditions is a betrayal of basic human decency and a stain on the rule of law. Congress has the authority to act. Use it. Subpoena the records. Hold hearings. Demand sworn testimony. The American people deserve answers, and Mr. Alam’s family deserves the truth. Failure to investigate would send a dangerous message that some lives are disposable under federal custody. That cannot be tolerated in a constitutional democracy.
