Do Not Cut Dept. of Animal Services’ Budget
43 so far! Help us get to 50 signers!
I am writing to express my deep concern and strong opposition to the proposed $4.8 million reduction in funding for the Department of Animal Services, which includes the elimination of 80 regular positions and 40 resolution-funded employees. These cuts threaten the welfare of countless animals and undermine our city's commitment to humane and responsible animal care.
The proposed budget cuts could lead to the closure of at least three of the city's six animal shelters, exacerbating existing issues of overcrowding and understaffing. Currently, shelters are operating at 155% capacity, with dogs often doubled or tripled in kennels designed for single animals. This overcrowding not only causes undue stress and suffering for the animals but also increases the risk of disease transmission and behavioral issues, making them less adoptable and more likely to be euthanized.
National data indicates that shelters across the country are facing similar challenges, with a significant increase in dog intakes and a decrease in adoptions. In 2022, dog adoptions were down 2.2% compared to 2021, while dog intakes increased by 3.7%. This trend underscores the urgent need for community support and adequate funding to ensure the well-being of shelter animals.
Moreover, I would like to remind you of your campaign promise to make Los Angeles a national model for animal welfare. Since taking office, however, the situation in our shelters has deteriorated, with more dogs and cats dying due to lack of resources and support. This not only breaks a promise made to the citizens of Los Angeles but also reflects poorly on our city's values and priorities.
I urge you to reconsider these proposed budget cuts and instead invest in the Department of Animal Services to ensure that all animals in our city receive the care and protection they deserve. This includes maintaining full staffing levels, keeping all shelters operational, and providing adequate resources for medical care, food, and enrichment.
Thank you for your attention to this critical matter. I trust that you will make decisions that reflect the compassion and responsibility that our city stands for.
