The Department of Defense (DOD) has failed five consecutive audits and cannot account for over half of its $3.1 trillion in assets. This massive financial mismanagement reveals an alarming lack of accountability and oversight within the agency that commands 13% of the federal budget. Over 18 months ago, a bipartisan effort led by Senators Grassley and Sanders sought to address rampant waste and fraud at the Pentagon through the Audit the Pentagon Act. This commonsense legislation would require the DOD to finally pass a full, independent audit or face financial consequences for noncompliance. Contractors routinely overcharge the department by egregious markups, sometimes as high as 4,451%. The Commission on Wartime Contracting found between $31-60 billion spent in Iraq and Afghanistan was lost to fraud and waste. It is imperative that this administration demonstrate a genuine commitment to curbing wasteful spending by taking concrete action to compel badly needed reform and transparency at the bloated Department of Defense.
