I am writing to express my grave concerns and strong opposition to any potential deployment of federalized troops against peaceful protesters demonstrating against ICE activities in the Los Angeles area.
Such an action would represent a profound departure from core Republican and conservative principles and a dangerous overreach of federal power.
The Republican party has always championed individual liberty, limited government, and the crucial balance between federal and state authority. The Posse Comitatus Act of 1878, a cornerstone of U.S. legal tradition, rightly restricts the use of the military in domestic law enforcement, safeguarding civilian control and preventing the militarization of our streets. Using federal troops against civilians, even in the context of protests, risks trampling on fundamental First Amendment rights to free speech and assembly, and erodes the vital trust between citizens and their government.
Furthermore, deploying federalized troops in such a situation would be an affront to the principle of state sovereignty. Local and state law enforcement agencies are equipped and responsible for maintaining order within their jurisdictions. Federal intervention of this nature should be reserved for the gravest of emergencies, when state authority has demonstrably failed to uphold the law or protect essential federal functions—conditions that are not present here.
We must resist the temptation to federalize local issues and instead empower our communities and their chosen representatives to manage such situations. To deploy federal troops against citizens exercising their constitutional rights would be an authoritarian act, creating a dangerous precedent that undermines the very foundations of our republic.
I urge you to publicly denounce any consideration of using federalized troops against ICE protesters in Los Angeles and to actively work to ensure that federal power is exercised with the utmost restraint and respect for constitutional liberties.
