An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Keep Special Education in Education

135 so far! Help us get to 250 signers!

As your constituent, I urge you to oppose transferring IDEA and special education oversight to HHS. Special education is fundamentally about education, not healthcare. Moving oversight out of the Department of Education would weaken educational expertise, create confusion for families, and undermine accountability for ensuring students with disabilities receive a free appropriate public education. The current system absolutely needs reform—but the answer is to strengthen IDEA through better enforcement, stronger accountability, faster dispute resolution, and improved educational outcomes, not remove education from special education. Please reject this harmful proposal and instead pursue reforms that truly strengthen the rights and educational opportunities of students with disabilities.
