An open letter to State Senates (Ariz. only)

Oppose SB1134: Extension of Political Sign Display Period

1 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!

I urge you to oppose SB1134 when it comes before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday. This bill would extend the political sign display period by approximately 40 days, allowing signs to appear 71 days before early ballots are mailed rather than 71 days before the election itself. Arizona already endures one of the longest political sign seasons in the country. Extending this period by more than a month would subject communities to visual clutter for nearly four months instead of the current timeframe. Residents across the political spectrum consistently describe political signs as a nuisance, ugly, and trash. Every election cycle, one of the most frequent questions journalists receive is when these signs will finally be removed from our neighborhoods and roadsides. This extension serves no compelling public interest. Voters have ample time to learn about candidates through debates, forums, mailers, digital advertising, and media coverage. The current 71-day window before Election Day already provides more than two months for sign-based campaigning. Adding 40 more days does not enhance democratic participation or voter education. It simply prolongs the visual blight that residents find objectionable. Political signs create legitimate concerns beyond aesthetics. They obstruct sightlines at intersections, litter our communities when improperly secured or abandoned after elections, and require municipal resources for enforcement and cleanup. Extending the display period compounds these problems and increases costs for local governments already stretched thin. Senator Gowan's SB1134 prioritizes candidate visibility over community quality of life. Arizona families should not have to tolerate an additional month of political signage cluttering their neighborhoods, school routes, and commercial corridors. The current law strikes a reasonable balance between First Amendment rights and community standards. I ask you to vote no on SB1134 in committee this Wednesday and prevent this unnecessary extension of Arizona's political sign season.
