Continued access to telehealth services is vital for ensuring quality healthcare, particularly for vulnerable populations like the elderly, disabled, and those in rural areas. If Congress fails to pass the Telehealth Modernization Act of 2024 before December 31st, millions of Americans will lose the ability to receive remote medical care through Medicare and other insurance programs. This will severely disrupt access to specialists, therapy services, emergency care, and more for those who face difficulty traveling or have mobility issues. Telemedicine has proven immensely beneficial, with studies showing high patient satisfaction and improved treatment outcomes. Moreover, it can potentially reduce costly emergency room visits and increase medication compliance. With COVID-19 and other infectious diseases still circulating, telehealth also allows people to access care while minimizing potential exposures and staying safer. Telehealth is not just a matter of convenience, but a necessity for many to receive proper care. Urgent action is needed to prevent this modern healthcare service from being eliminated, which would disproportionately impact our most vulnerable citizens. An extension or permanent coverage of telehealth flexibilities must be secured to protect this crucial avenue of care.
