I am writing as a concerned constituent to denounce the federal government’s decision to deploy U.S. military forces to Portland, Oregon. This action represents a dangerous overreach of executive authority, a waste of taxpayer resources, and an unnecessary intrusion into our state and local affairs.
Governor Tina Kotek, Portland city officials, and Oregon’s congressional delegation have all made clear that federal troops are not needed or wanted here. Portland is not a war zone, nor is there a lawless emergency that justifies this type of response. The suggestion that our community requires a military presence to function is deeply insulting and patently false.
This deployment undermines the principles of local control and civil authority. The use of federal troops in domestic law enforcement settings raises serious constitutional questions, including potential violations of the Posse Comitatus Act. If unchecked, this action risks setting a precedent in which the President can arbitrarily impose military force against U.S. cities without state consent. That is not how our democracy is meant to function.
Beyond the constitutional dangers, this move wastes valuable federal resources at a time when those same funds could be directed toward real priorities—affordable housing, public health, infrastructure, or community safety measures that actually work. Portlanders and Oregonians need investment in solutions, not intimidation through unnecessary military force.
I urge you to use your voice and your office to oppose this reckless deployment. Please demand oversight, call for hearings, and do everything within your power to prevent the misuse of our military in Portland or any other American city. Congress must make it clear that such abuses of power will not stand.
Thank you for your service and for taking action to protect both the people of Oregon and the principles of our democracy.
