I am writing as a constituent to urge you to oppose any effort to repeal or significantly weaken Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act.
Section 230 is a foundational law that protects free expression and innovation on the internet while allowing online platforms to moderate harmful content. Without it, websites would face overwhelming legal risk for user-generated content, leading many to either over-censor lawful speech or shut down entirely. This would disproportionately harm small businesses, startups, nonprofits, and community forums that lack the resources to handle constant litigation.
Repealing or weakening Section 230 would not make the internet safer. Instead, it would consolidate power in the hands of the largest tech companies that can afford extensive legal teams, while silencing everyday users and eliminating smaller platforms. It would also discourage responsible content moderation by making platforms legally liable for any attempt to manage harmful material.
While online harms are real and deserve serious solutions, Section 230 is not the cause of those problems. Targeted, evidence-based policies—such as stronger enforcement of existing laws, improved transparency requirements, and support for digital literacy—are far more effective than dismantling the legal framework that enables a free and open internet.
I respectfully ask you to defend Section 230 and work toward thoughtful reforms that protect users without undermining free speech, competition, and innovation online.
Thank you for your time and for representing our community.
