President Trump's recent actions regarding Greenland demand immediate congressional intervention. On Monday, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre confirmed receiving a message from Trump stating he no longer feels obligated to think purely of peace and declaring that the world is not secure unless the United States has complete and total control of Greenland. This followed Trump's announcement of a 10% import tax on goods from eight nations, including NATO allies Norway and Denmark, starting in February.
These actions violate fundamental principles of international law and threaten our most critical alliances. Greenland is a self-governing territory of Denmark, a founding NATO member. Trump's refusal to rule out military force against an ally's territory represents an unprecedented breach of the Atlantic alliance that has secured American interests for 75 years. Thousands of Greenlanders marched this weekend in opposition, with Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen stating they will not be pressured and stand firm on dialogue, respect, and international law.
The economic consequences are equally serious. Six of the eight targeted countries are European Union members. European Council President Antonio Costa announced Sunday that EU leaders expressed readiness to defend themselves against any form of coercion, with a summit expected this week. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the tariff threats completely wrong and warned that a trade war serves no one's interest.
Your constitutional oath requires you to defend the Constitution against all threats, foreign and domestic. I urge you to take immediate action to constrain this dangerous escalation. Congress must reassert its authority over tariffs and foreign policy, pass resolutions affirming our NATO commitments, and make clear that military action against allied territory is unacceptable. Our alliances and constitutional order depend on your willingness to act now.
