I urge you to oppose any proposal to expand school voucher programs, including tax provisions that could decimate local schools nationwide. Public schools are the cornerstone of our democracy, providing education to over 90% of American students and serving as inclusive spaces where all children can learn and thrive. A national voucher program fueled by tax breaks that help the wealthy would divert taxpayer dollars away from these public schools and send them to private institutions that are not held to the same accountability, equity, or transparency standards.
I’m specifically concerned about the provisions in the House budget bill that give donors tax incentives for funding private school vouchers. Also, the House package basically creates a tax shelter for wealthy people to avoid capital gains taxes while funneling public resources to private schools. It is worth noting that most nonprofits do not get these kinds of charitable giving incentives at a time when many organizations are struggling to meet the needs of people in our community.
School privatization efforts like voucher programs have consistently failed to show improvements in student outcomes and often reinforce inequality by subsidizing schools that can select their students and exclude those with disabilities or differing beliefs. Rather than funding exclusionary systems, we should invest in strengthening our public schools so that every child has access to a high-quality education.
Please stand with students, families, and communities by rejecting any legislation that promotes school privatization through vouchers, and voice opposition to tax provisions that will decimate public schools in our community and nationwide in final budget legislation.
Thank you.
