History’s note to the current GOP…Appeasement is not a good strategy.
The war with Iran is an international mess. More than a dozen Americans in uniform have died. Hundreds have been wounded in combat. A school in Iran suffered a direct hit by us, killing more than 175, most of them children.
Gas prices have risen sharply, by nearly $1 a gallon. Airline executives are predicting higher fares this summer due to jet fuel costs.
Meanwhile, the Strait of Hormuz remains clogged. And among Trump’s latest ideas to solve the problem is to bomb Iran’s civilian power plants, a violation of the Geneva conventions.
The price of coffee has risen up to 50% since Trump took office.
The NYT reports that the average monthly new car payment reached $774 in January.
The average interest rate on a 30-year fixed mortgage rate has jumped nearly half a percentage point since the war began.
And there is the ongoing partial government shutdown, which the president keeps alive with his resistance to any pragmatic bipartisan deal.
But it’s not just Trump’s scattershot policies. Those in the GOP who claim that Trump is right about everything will have to answer for his character, too.
For example, longtime public servant Robert Mueller III recently passed away. Mueller volunteered to serve in the Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. He was wounded in combat and was awarded the Purple Heart. Mueller prosecuted Panamanian strongman Manuel Noriega as well as those who bombed a Pan Am flight over Lockerbie, Scotland, killing 259 people onboard and 11 Scots on the ground. He served as head of the FBI.
A war hero, a public servant, a patriot.
When hearing the news of Mueller’s death, Trump posted on Truth Social: “Good, I’m glad he’s dead. He can no longer hurt innocent people.”
Then add in the multitude of personal insults heaped on his own citizens, his own GOP, other world leaders. Anyone and everyone within range of his mercurial displeasure has experienced his juvenile wrath.
But the GOP laughs, applauds, and moves on, desperately hoping their time in the spotlight never comes. While allowing it all to happen to the rest of us.
And lastly, Pam Bondi may be gone, but Epstein lives. And will until the DOJ follows the court order to release the rest of the files.
But it was not Bondi who was photographed repeatedly with Epstein. Not Bondi who drew him a lewd birthday card. Not Bondi who offered the quote, that Epstein liked women “on the younger side”.
Bondi needed to go because of her dereliction to the DOJ in favor of the guy that did all that. And that’s the guy who absolutely needs to lose his job.
But while the GOP spins in circles trying to figure out if they have a political future left, we will continue to deal with the never-ending presidential code-speak.
Trump on Truth Social on Friday posted: “With a little more time, we can easily OPEN THE HORMUZ STRAIT, TAKE THE OIL, & MAKE A FORTUNE. IT WOULD BE A “GUSHER” FOR THE WORLD???””
Really, Republicans? This is what you plan to appease?
Because if you don’t oppose this, then you own this.
