Reject Mass Surveillance Through Flock and License Plate Readers
20 so far! Help us get to 25 signers!
I'm asking you to oppose the expansion of Flock and other mass surveillance license plate reader systems in our communities. Constant surveillance is government overreach, and these systems track every law-abiding resident's movements without cause or oversight.
More than 180 Michigan law enforcement agencies now use license plate readers, up from just 60 in 2022. Detroit alone has 566 cameras tracking every vehicle across the city. This explosive growth has happened with zero accountability, no data retention limits, and no transparency about who accesses this information or how it's shared.
Warren Police conducted 28 Homeland Security Investigations searches in just five weeks this year. Local surveillance data is being handed to federal agencies, and residents have no way to know what's happening with information collected about their daily movements. Different agencies have wildly different policies on sharing with immigration authorities.
We don't need more cameras watching us. We need you to reject proposals to expand Flock and similar systems, and to support real restrictions on how this technology is deployed and used.
