An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Defend democracy and constitutional checks against unchecked executive power

Trump's authoritarian proclamations and accompanying executive overreach represent an outright attack on American democracy and constitutional principles of checks and balances. His recent measures to seize greater control over independent agencies by allowing him to directly hire and fire their leaders consolidates immense power in the presidency. Coupled with his administration's legally dubious revocation of New York's congestion pricing program against state and local will, these actions concentrate alarming levels of federal authority unconstrained by traditional counterweights. This brazen assault on democratic norms necessitates a resolute defense of the Constitution's framework by all elected officials, who took an oath to uphold and protect the Constitution - not to support the establishment of an unchecked monarchy. Senators and representatives must firmly reject this latest erosion of checks and balances and reassert institutional safeguards against such executive overreach.
