As an active user of TikTok, I am writing to express my concerns over recent calls to ban the app in the United States. With an estimated 100 million American users, TikTok has become an essential platform for many of us to express our creativity, connect with others, and engage with American culture on a global stage.
It is clear that many lawmakers are skeptical about TikTok’s attempts to protect user data and its ties to China. However, banning the app outright is not the solution. This would be a gross overreach that would deny millions of Americans the right to use a platform that has become an important part of their lives.
I urge you to consider the following:
- Banning TikTok would not solve the issue of data privacy and security. Instead, we should work to develop robust data privacy and security regulations that would apply to all social media platforms, not just TikTok.
- TikTok has made significant efforts to address concerns about national security and user data. The company has stressed its independence from China and has taken steps to store user data on American soil.
- The concerns about TikTok’s impact on children are not unique to this platform. All social media platforms, including American ones, need to do more to protect young users from harmful content.
Banning TikTok would be a blatant attack on free speech and expression. It is not the government’s role to dictate what apps or platforms Americans can use to express themselves.
As an American citizen, I will remember this government overreach and how it denies me and millions of others the ability to use a platform that has become an integral part of our lives. I urge you to stand up for our rights and reject any calls to ban TikTok.
