Accountability for Fatal ICE Shooting and Federal Enforcement Abuses

I am writing as a constituent to demand immediate action from state leadership in response to a fatal ICE shooting and the continued lack of accountability for federal immigration enforcement operating within civilian communities. This is a matter of public safety, civil rights, and the responsibility of states to respond when federal actions cause civilian harm. On January 7, 2026, Renée Nicole Good, a 37-year-old mother of three and a U.S. citizen, was fatally shot by an ICE agent during a federal enforcement operation in Minneapolis. Video evidence of the incident raises serious and unresolved questions about the necessity and legality of lethal force used against a civilian inside the United States. Although ICE is a federal agency, this killing occurred in a state and local community, with consequences borne by residents, families, and local institutions. The decision to block independent state and local oversight of the investigation undermines public trust and leaves communities without meaningful accountability. State leaders do not lose their responsibility when harm is caused by federal actors. Governors and legislatures have both the authority and the obligation to defend the safety and rights of people living in their states and to challenge federal actions that violate those principles. I am asking for immediate action to: • Publicly condemn the killing of Renée Nicole Good. • Demand independent, non-federal oversight of the incident. • Support state resolutions or hearings addressing ICE and DHS conduct within the state. • Press Congress and federal officials to hold ICE, DHS leadership, and DHS Secretary Kristi Noem accountable. Silence or deferral is unacceptable. I expect a prompt written response outlining the actions you will take.
