An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Exercise Congress’ Constitutional Authority Over Tariffs

We don’t have to let Trump wreck our economy with tariffs—that’s a choice. The Constitution gives trade authority to Congress, not the President. Congress delegated tariff powers to the President and you now need to take them back. The president's recent announcement of sweeping "reciprocal" tariffs on imports from over 180 countries risks severely damaging the U.S. economy. These tariffs, ranging from 10% to over 50% on goods from major trading partners like China, the European Union, India and Japan, will lead to higher prices for American consumers and businesses. Economists warn they could push the U.S. into recession by reducing consumer purchasing power and disposable income growth. While the administration aims to level the playing field for American exporters, universal tariffs on such a massive scale invite retaliation from other nations, escalating into a destructive trade war. This hardline approach abandons diplomacy and negotiation, despite warnings from U.S. allies and industries about potential harm. The Senate has already voted to terminate tariffs on Canadian imports, signaling bipartisan concerns. To avoid crippling economic consequences for American families and businesses, I urge you to oppose the president's tariff plan and push for a more measured, strategic approach that utilizes targeted sanctions and safeguards rather than escalating tensions. Open dialogue and multilateral cooperation with trade partners are essential to advance America's economic interests without inflicting self-damage. Protecting domestic industries is valid, but not at the expense of broader prosperity. I encourage prioritizing policies that foster growth over protectionist measures that risk recession. Art. I, Sec. 8 of the constitution grants congress the authority “to lay and collect taxes, duties, imposts, and excuses,” NOT the executive branch. I urge you and your colleagues to exercise and honor your constitutional rights and duties to reign in Trump’s overreach. Thank you.
