Texas: Uphold the Separation of Church and State

I am writing to strongly oppose the 2025 bills that attack the separation of church and state in Texas. Laws like Senate Bill 10, forcing the Ten Commandments into every public school classroom, and Senate Bill 11, mandating daily prayer periods, cross a dangerous line. Public schools must remain inclusive for students of all faiths and beliefs—not tools for promoting one religion through government authority (Texas Tribune, April 2025). Some lawmakers have falsely claimed there is “no separation of church and state,” ignoring decades of legal precedent, including the Supreme Court’s decision in Stone v. Graham, which struck down similar mandates as unconstitutional. These efforts do not defend religious freedom; they threaten it by favoring specific religious views over others (Stone v. Graham, 1980). Other bills, like those approving Bible-based public school curricula and expanding religious displays in government buildings, continue this pattern of state-sponsored religion (Chron, March 2025). Texans deserve public institutions that serve everyone equally, not ones that alienate based on faith. I urge you to reject all legislation that undermines religious liberty and constitutional boundaries. Protecting the separation of church and state is essential to preserving democracy and the freedoms of every Texan, regardless of their beliefs.
