An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Trump Abandoned’s Europe, Putin Is Ecstatic. Which Side Are You On?

I am writing as a concerned citizen regarding reports that the United States may significantly reduce the fighter aircraft and military assets it provides to NATO forces in Europe. I am not someone who advocates for war. In fact, my concern comes from the belief that strong alliances and credible deterrence are among the most effective tools for preventing war. NATO has helped preserve peace and stability in Europe for generations, and American leadership has been central to that success. If these reports are accurate, I would like to know what strategic objective is being served by reducing our military presence and capabilities in Europe. Where are these aircraft and assets being redeployed? What specific threat assessment justifies this shift? How does this decision strengthen America’s long-term security interests? The world is entering a period of increasing competition among major powers. Russia continues to challenge European security, while China is actively seeking to expand its influence around the globe. When the United States reduces its presence among allies without a clearly articulated strategy, adversaries may interpret that as a weakening of American resolve. I am also concerned about the economic implications. The strength of the United States is not based solely on military power or economic output. It is also built on confidence in American institutions, commitments, and leadership. The U.S. dollar serves as the world’s reserve currency because nations trust the stability of the international system that America helped create after World War II. If our allies begin to question our reliability, the long-term consequences may extend far beyond defense policy and into trade, finance, and America’s global influence. American leadership is not an act of charity toward other nations. It is a strategic investment that has benefited the United States for decades. The costs of maintaining alliances and deterrence are often far lower than the costs of responding to instability after it emerges. I urge you to seek greater transparency regarding these reported force reductions and to carefully examine whether they advance America’s long-term security, economic interests, and global leadership. Thank you for your service and for representing the people of our state
