An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Congress Must Stop A $1.7 Billion Political Slush Fund

As your constituent, I urge you to speak out immediately against the reported proposal to create a $1.7 billion taxpayer-funded “weaponization” compensation fund that could benefit political allies, associated entities, or politically favored claimants. Reports indicate that the fund may be created as part of a settlement in which President Trump would drop claims against the federal government, including his $10 billion Internal Revenue Service lawsuit. This is not an ordinary settlement issue. It is a direct threat to honest government, equal justice, and responsible use of taxpayer money. A TAXPAYER-FUNDED POLITICAL PAYOUT Taxpayer dollars should not be used to create a compensation system for political allies of a sitting president. Any fund designed to pay people who claim they were harmed by prior investigations, prosecutions, or lawful scrutiny would invite abuse, favoritism, and partisan retaliation. The danger is especially serious if claims could be made by January 6 defendants, political supporters, or entities connected to Trump himself. A DANGEROUS CONFLICT OF INTEREST No president should be able to resolve personal or politically connected legal claims by helping create a large federal fund that may benefit allies or associated entities. Even the appearance of such self-dealing would damage public confidence in the rule of law. Government settlements must serve the public interest, not become a vehicle for rewarding loyalty or rewriting legal accountability. A THREAT TO INDEPENDENT LAW ENFORCEMENT This proposal would further politicize federal law enforcement. If every investigation of powerful political figures can later be recast as “weaponization” and converted into taxpayer-funded compensation, future administrations may use the same tactic to punish accountability and reward supporters. That would weaken the principle that no person is above the law. CONGRESS MUST ACT NOW Congress must draw a clear line. Public money belongs to the American people, not to a political compensation system for presidential allies. Once such a fund is created, taxpayer money may be distributed before Congress or the public can fully assess the legality, beneficiaries, or conflicts of interest involved. Congress has a constitutional duty to ensure that federal funds are not used to create a politically controlled payout system beyond meaningful legislative oversight. I urge you to take the following actions: (1) Speak out immediately against any $1.7 billion “weaponization” compensation fund. (2) Hold investigative hearings on who proposed the fund, who would control it, who could receive money, and what legal authority would support it. (3) Seek full public disclosure of any settlement negotiations, proposed eligibility rules, and potential beneficiaries. (4) Pass legislation prohibiting taxpayer-funded compensation programs that reward political allies, benefit a president’s associated entities, or convert partisan grievance claims into public payouts. Thank you.
