Stop the inconsistency in tax-free status

Explain it to me in a way that has logical consistency. The IRS just announced that churches can endorse candidates from the pulpit, carving out an exception in a decades old ban on politicking by tax-exempt non-profits……But universities have to be apolitical to keep their tax free status. I’m clearly not as good at mental gymnastics as Republicans appear to be, so I don’t get how this works in a democracy. There's not even an appearance of impartiality anymore.
