An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Rescind ICC Sanctions, Protect International Justice, Rule of Law

The Trump administration's executive order imposing sanctions on the International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecutor and staff is an alarming attack on international justice and accountability for war crimes. This dangerous overreach threatens the crucial work of dedicated professionals like Eric Iverson, a U.S. Army veteran serving as an ICC prosecutor investigating atrocities in Darfur. The sanctions risk criminalizing Iverson's efforts to hold perpetrators accountable, violating his constitutional rights. Congress must take action to rein in this administration's assault on human rights and the rule of law. Allowing these sanctions to stand obstructs the pursuit of justice for victims of war crimes globally, including in Sudan where new atrocities are unfolding amid civil war. It also sends a chilling message that could deter Americans and others from careers upholding international law. This reckless policy undermines American values and interests. Congress should use its oversight authority to demand answers and block enforcement of these destructive sanctions through legislation if necessary. Upholding human rights and pursuing accountability are critical for lasting peace and security.
