Decriminalize psychedelics in New York
36 so far! Help us get to 50 signers!
I'm writing to you today about something vital for our state's future: decriminalizing psychedelic drugs. This isn't about promoting drug use; it's about addressing our serious mental health crisis with compassion and science.
New York faces a significant mental health burden. Around one in three New Yorkers experienced depression or anxiety symptoms as of March 2023. Annually, roughly 8% of adult New Yorkers suffer from depressive symptoms, yet less than 40% seek treatment. This costs NYC an estimated $14 billion annually in lost productivity.
However, promising research highlights the therapeutic potential of psychedelics like psilocybin and MDMA in controlled settings. Critically, these substances are not inherently addictive. Studies show classic psychedelics like psilocybin and LSD do not lead to dependence.
Their true power lies in treating debilitating mental health conditions:
- PTSD: MDMA-assisted therapy shows incredible promise. Phase 3 trials indicate that 67%-71% of participants no longer met PTSD diagnostic criteria after MDMA-assisted therapy, compared to 32%-48% with placebo.
- Anxiety: Psilocybin has shown significant and sustained reductions in anxiety, even for treatment-resistant cases.
- Depression: Psilocybin has been effective in improving depressive symptoms in over half of reviewed studies, with effects lasting weeks to months.
Decriminalization would open doors for more research and regulated therapeutic models, offering hope to many. It shifts our focus from punishment to public health. Let's embrace evidence-based solutions for a healthier New York.
