Quite recently, H.R. 5800: the Commission on Americans Abroad Act of 2021 was introduced to the 117th Congress.
This bill mandates the establishment of a bipartisan commission to examine how United States laws impact United States citizens living in other countries.
There are 9 million citizens living abroad, paying taxes and voting like any other citizen. There is also evidence to suggest that in close races, we are part of a decisive margin of victory.
Despite being American citizens, we are not given adequate consideration when new laws are introduced, many of which have truly disastrous and likely unintended impacts on our lives and livelihoods.
I urge your office to support this bill.
The bill enjoys bipartisan sponsorship and it simply creates room to examine and discuss the issues; there are no substantive changes in law included in or committed to in this bill.
Should you have any questions, Eric May in Rep. Maloney’s office should be able to help.
