I’m seriously concerned about the current state of the Supreme Court. The Senate Committee on the Judiciary’s report on the justices has found major ethical lapses across partisan lines. Whether that be gifts accepted by Justices, access to the Justices at events being sold, or Justices being involved in cases in which they have vested interests. The Supreme Court is not held accountable to voters, and yet you are bound to stricter ethical rules. You couldn’t accept the gifts they do, and you certainly wouldn’t get away with failing to disclose them like Justices Thomas and Alito. However, targeting individual justices and their behavior won’t fix the underlying problem. Therefore, I’m urging you to advance and vote in favor of the Supreme Court Ethics Recusal and Transparency Act and the High Court Gift Ban Act to establish simple, enforceable ethics rules that mirror those that other judges and officials in this country must adhere to. I’d also urge you to support the Supreme Court Term Limits and Regular Appointments Act in order to make sure that the composition of the Supreme Court is no longer dictated by random death or strategic retirement. This is not radical as 68% of Americans support term limits on the Supreme Court (University of Pennsylvania Study September 12, 2024). This will help encourage the court to be less partisan and thus serve as a better check and balance.
