Protect National Security - Reject Trump's Radical Shift In U.S. Foreign Policy

American Security Depends On NATO And Ukraine
The newly released National Security Strategy represents a radical departure from decades of bipartisan U.S. policy. It scolds European allies, downplays Russia’s ongoing aggression, and urges a rushed political deal with Moscow that would leave Ukraine exposed and our alliances weakened. I urge you to reject it along with any retreat from our alliances, and to reaffirm strong U.S. support for NATO, for Europe, and for Ukraine as it resists a brutal assault that threatens the stability of the entire democratic world.
NATO Is America’s Front Line
NATO is not charity. It is the most successful security pact in modern history and the foundation of U.S. power projection, deterrence, and global credibility. Our allies provide intelligence, bases, logistics, and shared defense investments that save American lives and reduce American costs. Undermining NATO would embolden adversaries, fracture Western unity, and send a dangerous message that the United States no longer honors the commitments that have kept Europe stable for generations.
Russia’s Threat Is Real And Growing
Russia did not merely “intervene.” It launched two illegal invasions, annexed Ukrainian territory, committed mass atrocities, targeted civilian infrastructure, and openly threatened NATO countries. A Kremlin victory would reward conquest, expand authoritarian influence, and demonstrate that the United States will not defend the international order it built. Autocrats around the world are watching closely to see whether America stands firm or steps back.
Why Congress Must Reject The New Strategy
The new policy minimizes Russia as a central threat, questions the reliability of key NATO partners, and seeks a premature political settlement that would freeze the conflict on Russia’s terms. That would lock in territorial theft, destroy Ukraine’s chance at a secure future, and encourage further aggression in Europe and beyond. Retreat is not strategy. It is an invitation to escalation.
What Congress Should Do
Congress should reaffirm its commitment to NATO, maintain or increase Ukraine assistance, and make clear that any settlement must respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Above all, Congress must play an active role in US foreign policy and signal that the United States will stand firmly with its allies, uphold the credibility of its security guarantees, and support a European democracy fighting for survival against a violent authoritarian aggressor.
