The federal government's approval of yet another deepwater oil export terminal off the Texas coast is a deeply concerning development that prioritizes short-term profits over the long-term sustainability of our planet. This decision perpetuates our reliance on fossil fuels, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions and exacerbating the catastrophic impacts of climate change. While the developers claim this terminal will be more efficient and reduce some emissions, the fact remains that it will facilitate the continued extraction and consumption of oil, a major driver of global warming. The Environmental Protection Agency itself estimates this project could generate up to 710,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually. Moreover, this terminal poses risks to the fragile coastal ecosystems and communities in its vicinity. The small town of Jones Creek has already voiced opposition, citing concerns over pollution, drainage issues, and inadequate infrastructure to handle such a massive industrial project. Residents of Surfside Beach, where pipelines will run, also fear the disruption to their way of life. At a time when the world should be urgently transitioning away from fossil fuels to mitigate the catastrophic effects of climate change, this decision represents a step in the wrong direction. It prioritizes short-term economic gains over the long-term health and well-being of our planet and future generations. We must take a stand against such environmentally destructive projects and demand that our leaders prioritize sustainable solutions that protect our air, water, and ecosystems. Approving more fossil fuel infrastructure is not the answer. We urge you to reconsider this decision and instead focus on developing clean, renewable energy sources that will safeguard our planet for years to come.
