I am writing to urge you to support Representative Shri Thanedar's articles of impeachment against Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, introduced on December 4, 2025. The charges of Murder and Conspiracy to Murder, along with Reckless and Unlawful Mishandling of Classified Information, demand immediate congressional action to protect American servicemembers and uphold the rule of law.
According to Washington Post reporting, Hegseth allegedly gave a verbal directive in September to kill everybody on a civilian boat from Venezuela during military operations targeting alleged drug boats in the Caribbean. This order violates the Defense Department's Law of War Manual, which establishes clear protocols for engagement with civilian vessels. Directing the killing of all persons aboard a civilian boat constitutes an unlawful order that puts our military personnel in legal jeopardy and undermines international humanitarian law.
Equally concerning is the March incident in which Hegseth and other top Trump national security officials discussed specific details of a U.S. attack on Houthi rebels in Yemen through a Signal group chat. The leaked information included sensitive operational details such as target systems and attack times. This reckless handling of classified information directly endangered American lives by compromising operational security and potentially alerting adversaries to our military plans.
The Secretary of Defense holds one of the most critical positions in our government, responsible for the safety and strategic deployment of our armed forces. When that individual gives unlawful orders and mishandles classified information, the consequences extend to every servicemember and their families. These are not partisan allegations but documented incidents that warrant thorough investigation and accountability.
I urge you to publicly support these articles of impeachment and work with colleagues across the aisle to ensure they receive a fair hearing. Our military personnel deserve leadership that respects the law of war and protects operational security. Secretary Hegseth has demonstrated he cannot provide that leadership.
