Oppose AB 105: Protect Online Privacy and First Amendment Rights

Assembly Bill 105 poses a significant threat to online privacy and First Amendment rights in Wisconsin. As a constituent and web technology professional, I strongly urge you to oppose this legislation. The proposed age verification requirements in AB 105 would create a dangerous precedent for government surveillance and compromise the privacy of all Wisconsin residents. In our current climate, where data breaches and identity theft are rampant, we cannot afford to implement systems that collect and store sensitive personal information on such a massive scale. Furthermore, the potential ban on VPNs would severely impact my ability to perform my job in web technology. VPNs are essential tools for secure remote work and protecting sensitive data. Restricting their use would not only hinder Wisconsin's tech industry but also leave our residents more vulnerable to cyber threats. While protecting children online is a noble goal, AB 105 is an overreach that undermines parental authority. Wisconsin already trusts parents to make responsible decisions regarding their children's alcohol consumption in certain contexts. It's inconsistent and illogical to then assume parents are incapable of monitoring their children's online activities, especially given the numerous parental control tools already available. The bill's approach to online safety is misguided and disproportionate. It fails to address the root causes of online risks to minors while imposing broad restrictions that infringe on the rights of all citizens. The potential for abuse of such a system far outweighs any perceived benefits. I implore you to vote against AB 105 when it comes before the Senate. Instead, focus on promoting digital literacy education and empowering parents with knowledge and tools to guide their children's online experiences. This approach would be more effective in protecting minors while preserving the privacy and freedoms that Wisconsinites value. The internet should remain a space for free expression and innovation, not a realm of government-mandated surveillance. Please stand up for our digital rights and oppose this misguided legislation.
