As a member of various important Committees with oversight into this matter, we urge you to block any attempt at funding for the continued folly of a border wall with Mexico. This project is not only impractical but has proven ineffective and in some cases a source of fraud in construction contracts.
The $25-billion dollars that this bill would appropriate will be wasted. Such a wall would also require huge improvements in feeder roads, electrical power, and it would take an army of CBP agents to man it 24 hours a day.
History is full of examples of failed projects like the one proposed. The Great Wall of China, while beautiful, was a failure. Hadrian’s Wall cost the Romans huge amounts of treasure to keep out the Picts, and eventually it was abandoned. These kinds of projects might provide jobs for construction, but there are many other sorts of public works projects or simply underfunded social programs that could be more useful, because they would be multi-purpose. A few alternatives, just for example:
- Better airports and safety for ail travel
- Better roads and bridges
- Public transit
- Improving our grid
- Upgrade our ports for trade purposes
If Homeland Security and the Border Patrol need money for enforcement, so be it: We can negotiate on how much and where it can be most economically used to make all the entry points into the United States more secure.
There’s no value in walling ourselves off from the world. History gives us examples of that failure of thought as well. Vote NO to funding the Wasteful Border Wall via S. 293. Thank You and your staff for their service.
