Initiate Impeachment Proceedings for Unconstitutional Military Action Against Iran

On February 28, 2026, President Trump announced "major combat operations" against Iran and launched coordinated strikes with Israel on Iranian military and nuclear infrastructure. This action occurred just one day after Iran agreed through Omani mediation to degrade its nuclear material stockpiles to unrefined levels, and while negotiations were scheduled to continue the following week in Vienna. The Constitution grants Congress alone the power to declare war. President Trump bypassed this requirement entirely, launching major military operations without congressional authorization. Iran responded with missile and air strikes across the region, targeting Israel, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Iraq. Multiple countries closed their airspace. This is not a limited strike but the beginning of a regional war that could draw in American forces stationed throughout the Middle East. The timing makes this particularly egregious. Diplomacy was working. After three rounds of indirect negotiations in Geneva throughout February 2026, Oman's foreign minister confirmed on February 27 that Iran had agreed to significant concessions on its nuclear program. Rather than allowing scheduled talks in Vienna to proceed, the President chose military action within 24 hours. This represents a clear violation of constitutional war powers. The 12-day conflict in June 2025 killed at least 610 Iranian citizens and 28 Israelis. That brief war led to internet blackouts, mass arrests of 21,000 people in Iran, and economic collapse that triggered widespread protests. Now we face an escalation that could be far worse, initiated without congressional debate or authorization. I urge you to immediately introduce articles of impeachment against President Trump for unconstitutional military action. Even if removal is unlikely, Congress must assert its constitutional authority over matters of war. Remaining silent while the President unilaterally launches major combat operations sets a dangerous precedent that renders congressional war powers meaningless. The Constitution demands action, and your constituents deserve representation in decisions that could cost American lives.
