Should tax cheats be on the Supreme Court?
It seems that at least Justice Thomas has been flouting tax regulations and avoiding paying taxes on gifts he has received for years.
My understanding is that any gift, be it cash or in-kind (such as school tuition or vacations) in excess of (currently) $17,000 should be reported. If the donor reports it he/she should pay a gift tax. If the donor does not report it and pay a gift tax, the recipient should report the value as income and pay income tax on the net adjusted income. It would appear that Justice Thomas has not done so for years.
I believe there should be a special prosecutor appointed to investigate the financial dealings of the Supreme Court justices. That is just on the possible tax evasion issue.
I think the special prosecutor should also look into the effect of the “gifts”; whether there was any quid pro quo or undue influence affecting the judicial decisions of the recipient(s).
