President Trump’s presidency has been marked by an extraordinary amount of misinformation. According to The Washington Post Fact Checker, he made 30,573 false or misleading claims in his first term, averaging 39 lies per day during his last year. In his 2024 campaign, he made 162 false claims in just one 64-minute event, which means over two misleading statements every minute. This wasn’t random; it was a deliberate strategy to distort reality and undermine public trust. The effects go beyond words. Political language in the U.S. has become increasingly hostile, primarily due to Trump's style since 2016. Internationally, American leadership has suffered, with approval ratings dropping from 22% in 2017 to just 16%. This decline has damaged alliances and empowered adversaries. France’s Senator Claude Malhuret even referred to Trump as the "noisy harbinger" of a world where treaties and laws are disregarded. We need action. There should be bipartisan legislation to hold elected officials accountable for spreading disinformation, similar to laws against libel and fraud. Facts are essential for democracy. Truth should not be partisan; it is a matter of patriotism. We must demand that our leaders commit to honesty and be held accountable when they fail to do so. America’s reputation and unity depend on it.
