Rein in Hegseth's Pentagon Restrictions to Free Press

79 so far! Help us get to 100 signers!

I am a voting constituent writing regarding actions taken by the Department of Defense under the leadership of Secretary Pete Hegseth. As reported major news outlets on March 23, 2026, the Pentagon has moved to further restrict press access, seemingly in direct defiance of a federal court order and the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. On March 20, 2026, U.S. District Judge Paul Friedman issued a permanent injunction against a restrictive Pentagon policy that allowed the department to label independent journalists as security risks and revoke their credentials for seeking unauthorized information. Judge Friedman’s ruling was clear: the policy was unconstitutionally vague and amounted to "viewpoint discrimination" designed to weed out disfavored journalists and replace them with media figures more favorable to the administration. Despite this judicial rebuke, the Pentagon responded on March 23 by shutting down the "Correspondents' Corridor"—a workspace used by journalists for decades—and announcing that press operations will be moved to a remote annex outside the main building. This move, which restricts the ability of reporters to maintain contact with military officials and attend briefings efficiently, is widely viewed by the Pentagon Press Association as a retaliatory measure. At a time when the United States is engaged in a war with Iran and a military incursion in Venezuela, Americans demand transparency. The public has a right to independent, unvarnished reporting on the actions of our military, especially when the lives of our service members are at stake. As Judge Friedman noted, a free press and an informed people are essential to our nation’s security. I urge you to exercise your oversight authority to: Demand full compliance by the Department of Defense with Judge Friedman’s ruling, ensuring that independent journalists from all outlets are granted the access required to fulfill their constitutional role. Investigate the retaliatory nature of the recent "annex" decision and the closure of the Correspondents' Corridor. Hold Secretary Pete Hegseth accountable for policies that infringe upon the First Amendment and undermine the public’s trust in our military institutions. Our republic depends on a free press. I look forward to you addressing this critical issue.
