An open letter to the U.S. Congress

The Constitution Is Not Optional — No Third Terms I Need You to Act

am writing to you as one of your constituents — a voter who pays attention, who participates in our democracy, and who is watching what you do and say right now with great care. I do not write to lecture you. I write because I am genuinely alarmed, and because I believe the office you hold carries a responsibility that demands action at this particular moment in our history. President Trump has repeatedly suggested, in public and on the record, that he is entitled to a third term in office. During his 2026 State of the Union address, he said — unprompted — “So in my first year of the second term — should be my third term — but strange things happen,” prompting chants of “Four more years” from members of the chamber. At rallies in early 2026, he asked crowds, “Should we do it a fourth time?” — a reference to his continued false claim that he won the 2020 election. He has reposted social media content calling for a third term as a “reward” for a stolen election. The 2020 election was not stolen. No court, no audit, and no credible investigation has ever found otherwise. The 22nd Amendment to the United States Constitution is unambiguous. No person may be elected president more than twice. This is not a guideline. It is the law — the same law that every member of Congress swears to uphold. I understand that speaking out against a president of your own party — or against one with an energized base — carries political risk. I am not dismissing that. But the oath you took was not to a party or a person. It was to the Constitution of the United States. And right now, that Constitution needs defenders who are willing to say clearly and publicly: this is a line that will not be crossed. I am asking you to do three specific things: One — Issue a clear, public statement affirming that presidential term limits are non-negotiable and that you will not support any effort — legislative, executive, or otherwise — to circumvent the 22nd Amendment. Two — Support or co-sponsor legislation reaffirming the sanctity of term limits and protecting the integrity of the 2026 midterm elections from executive interference. Three — Commit, on the record, to using every tool available to your office to oppose any attempt to extend this presidency beyond its constitutional limit, by any means. You were elected to represent the people of this district and to protect the institutions that make self-governance possible. With the 2026 midterm elections approaching, the American people are watching closely — and they will remember who stood firm when it mattered most. I have no interest in telling you how to do your job. But I do have a deep interest in the survival of the democratic system that makes your job — and mine as a citizen — possible. This is one of those moments. Please act accordingly.
