I am writing to express deep concern regarding the Trump administration’s proposed cuts to federal housing assistance at a time when rents are unaffordable for millions of Americans, while wealth inequality continues to reach historic highs.
The administration’s forthcoming FY26 budget is expected to propose massive reductions to HUD’s affordable housing and homelessness programs, including significant cuts and potential block granting of the Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) program—moves that would reduce the number of households receiving assistance and jeopardize the stability of tens of thousands of families. There are also plans to drastically cut HUD staff, with some offices facing up to a 75% reduction, threatening the agency’s ability to administer critical programs for homelessness, affordable housing, and civil rights enforcement. Other essential programs, such as the National Housing Trust Fund, Community Development Block Grant Program, and HOME Investment Partnerships Program, are also targeted for deep cuts or elimination.
These proposed cuts come as rents remain at record highs and millions of lower-income Americans struggle to afford basic shelter. Meanwhile, the wealthiest Americans have never been richer, further highlighting the urgent need for robust federal support for housing.
I urge you to reject these harmful proposals. Now is the time to strengthen—not weaken—federal housing assistance and ensure every American has access to safe, affordable housing.
