An open letter to the U.S. Congress

End Citizens United

10 so far! Help us get to 25 signers!

I am writing to urge you to support every legislative and constitutional effort to overturn Citizens United v. FEC. Like millions of Americans, I want my vote to matter as much as any billionaire’s donation, and I want my children and grandchildren to inherit a democracy where their voices cannot be purchased, muted, or overshadowed by corporate spending. Since the Citizens United decision, our elections have changed in ways that deeply damage democratic representation. According to the Brennan Center for Justice, dark-money groups spent over $1.9 billion in the 2024 federal election cycle — a record amount. This explosion of hidden, unaccountable money is not an expression of free speech; it is the systematic drowning out of voters’ voices. Unlimited corporate spending devalues the principle of one person, one vote. It forces legislators to pay attention to donors rather than constituents. And it stifles the ability of individual Americans — including the people you represent — to have meaningful influence in their own government. This is not a partisan concern. It’s an American concern. Pew Research Center reports that 72% of Americans, across parties, support limits on campaign spending by individuals and organizations. Republican, Democratic, and independent voters overwhelmingly agree: money has far too much influence in politics, and Citizens United must be addressed. Corporations are not people. They do not vote, serve our communities, or experience the consequences of political decisions. Yet Citizens United gives them political power far greater than that of the average citizen — including the constituents in your own district. The result is a government increasingly shaped by those who can afford to buy influence. This is not the democracy we were promised, and it is not the democracy future generations deserve. For these reasons, I respectfully ask you to take the following actions: 1. Support constitutional amendments such as the Citizens Over Corporations Amendment and H.J.Res.54, which reaffirm that constitutional rights belong to natural persons, not corporate entities. 2. Back legislation increasing transparency and closing dark-money loopholes. 3. Use your public platform to acknowledge the harm created by unlimited corporate political spending. 4. Work across the aisle, reflecting the overwhelming bipartisan desire among voters to restore fairness to our political system. Free and fair elections are not a Democratic value or a Republican value — they are an American value. Protecting the integrity of our elections is a responsibility that transcends party lines. I will be following your actions on this issue closely, and I hope you will choose to stand with the voters rather than the donors. Please commit publicly to supporting efforts to overturn Citizens United and to restore balance, honesty, and accountability to our elections. Thank you for your attention to this critical matter. Our democracy depends on leaders who are willing to defend it
