Accountability: The Weaponization of Federal Law Enforcement

I am writing to express deep concern regarding the dangerous transformation of the Department of Justice from an independent arbiter of law into a tool for presidential retribution. The discrepancy between the constitutional mandate for impartial justice and the current administration’s use of federal indictments to target political adversaries is a direct threat to American democracy.
- The SPLC "Fraud" Indictment: On April 21, 2026, the DOJ announced a sweeping federal indictment against the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), a civil rights organization that has long documented the rise of extremist groups. While the administration claims the investigation is about "financial fraud," the timing—following years of the President labeling the group a "partisan smear machine"—suggests a clear attempt to dismantle a prominent critic of his administration’s rhetoric. Americans deserve better than this.
- The Criminalization of James Comey’s Social Media: On April 28, 2026, a federal grand jury indicted former FBI Director James Comey for allegedly "threatening" the President. The "threat" in question was an Instagram photo of seashells arranged to read "86 47"—a common political shorthand for removing the 47th President—which prosecutors are now treating as a felony carrying a potential 10-year prison sentence. This is clearly ridiculous, and Americans deserve better than this.
- Targeting State and Institutional Officials: The DOJ has expanded its scope to include state officials and institutional leaders who have legally challenged the President’s policies. This includes the recent criminal charges brought against New York Attorney General Letitia James and the continued pressure on Federal Reserve Chair Jay Powell. Using federal resources to harass state-level officers and independent regulators who perform their constitutional duties is a hallmark of authoritarian overreach. Americans deserve better than this.
- The Purge of Career Professionals: The administration has overseen the departure of more than 25% of DOJ lawyers—thousands of career civil servants who have quit or been fired as the department shifts its focus toward targeting political opponents. By replacing non-partisan experts with ideological loyalists, the administration is dismantling the institutional integrity required to protect the civil rights of all citizens. Americans deserve better than this.
The American public requires a Department of Justice that serves the law, not the personal whims of the executive. I look forward to a response explaining how the administration intends to stop this unprecedented weaponization of federal power.
